Appeal
I’m going to tell you something that might shock you: I began Final Fantasy X three or four years ago, and through my first play (I didn’t beat the game until I started the game over again recently) I hated Tidus. I found him incredibly annoying, and I know this might sound weird, but he reminded me too much of things in my life I was trying really hard to forget about.
Why this shrine, then? Well obviously I feel different about him now. I’m a lot more comfortable with myself and my family, and it’s easier to talk about my past (as you may have noticed). When I played Final Fantasy X again, I really felt for Tidus, but more than that, I empathized with him. I guess that’s what drew me to him, and I guess that’s the reason behind this shrine. I was hoping by being able to truly relate to Tidus, I’d be able to offer something interesting that you haven’t seen in a shrine to him yet. I really hope I didn’t disappoint.
My past and our similarities aside, though, Tidus is a really interesting character. He spooked me a little at first when I found out what he was and still does sometimes now, but if you know me you know that that’s half the reason I like him. Tidus’ story reminds me of movies like The Lottery, The Wicker Man, and Identity, and that’s an incredibly awesome thing.
Also, not to make myself sound more morbid than I already sound, tragedies fascinate me, and I love the tragedy element in Tidus’ relationship with Yuna. Yuna’s just a part of Tidus’ story, but that’s what is great about it: His story is nothing more or less than an intricate weave of many really awesome pieces.
