Optimism

Sabin’s personality is almost ironic. With the death of his father, his strong yearn for freedom, and the way he blew up on the night of the coin toss, one would expect Sabin to be dark and pessimistic. He hated his life once, after all, and I think it’s interesting that despite all that has happened to him, he is actually a really positive person. I think that this is probably largely due to the simple life he has come to know. Imagine being Sabin for a moment with your future completely laid out for you and an entire kingdom on your shoulders. Now imagine that your brother takes the entire load off of you and gives you a chance for freedom. After ten years of learning martial arts and leading a life with no worries, you’d be pretty positive too. His life is carefree.

With his optimism, even in times of desperation, Sabin is able to find humor in life.

Of course I am (alive)! Did you think a little thing like the end of the world was gonna do me in?

I think his humor calms the other characters down, and it definitely brings light to a very dark game. His interaction with the rest of the party is hilarious, particular with Edgar, Cyan, Gau, Celes, and Relm, but even with his sarcasm, the others seem to take him seriously. Terra joins the Returners after Sabin tells her to trust his brother Edgar. I think that his optimism and humor made him trustworthy to Terra and the others. Edgar was able to take away Sabin’s worries, and he tries to convince the other not to worry, too. He knows Edgar is going to take care of everything, and he stays optimistic holding his faith in that.
