Fighter

Is fighting all that Sabin has? A lot of people would argue yes, that he’s not the brightest crayon in the box, and that he’s lucky he fights well because he wouldn’t have anything else to offer us in the game. Yes, Sabin is blonde, but he isn’t as dumb as he appears. I guess you could say Sabin’s just naïve. I prefer the term innocent.

Fighting is all that Sabin knows. He spent ten years mastering fighting, and it’s his way of coping with the problems around him. Or is it?

In one of Sabin and Cyan’s early scenes together, Sabin was able to realize that he couldn’t fight his way out of the predicament they were in, so he started to think. In this particular part of the game, they used Magitec Armors to get away. And it was Sabin’s plan. I was one of those people who mistook Sabin for stupid my first time through the game, but in my second play Sabin impressed me more and more like this. Think about it. Sabin was the one who realized that Gau’s “treasure” would allow them to breathe under water. He also knew that it was better to run with Cyan when they first met than to stay and fight.

Look... If we stick around any longer we'll have a regiment of troops down our throats.

Sabin is also selfless, not afraid to risk his life to save others. Near the end of the game, Sabin holds a falling building from crashing to save someone else. Where he got the strength to lift an entire building is never explained, but I think it’s similar to when Sabin saved Edgar at the end of the game. He’s capable of extraordinary things when he is needed, even fighting his own impulse to get violent.

So, fighter? Yeah, but he’s a thinker, too.
