Blitzes
Sabin is probably one of the most surprising mages in the game. And I know what you’re thinking: “Sabin, a mage? What?” It’s true. The neat thing about Final Fantasy VI is that you can use any character any way you want. The results may come and bite you in the ass, but you have options.
So what is Sabin’s magic? Simple; his blitzes. Sabin’s blitzes, though physical, are incredible during the beginning of the game. Later on the blitzes you learn are magical, and it’s my two cents that some of those blitzes are better than magic. Think about it this way: you get to deal elemental damage without using MP! Pretty sweet, huh?
I’ve compiled a list of the blitzes Sabin can learn, what they do, and what I think about them, because what good is a Sabin shrine without a section like this?
Pummel (Gained at Level 1): Throws a bunch of punches on one enemy. Pummel is necessary to get through Vargas and is useful on other enemies and bosses through the first third of the game, at least. It deals great damage and definitely makes battles quicker.
Aura Bolt (Gained at Level 6): Casts lightning elemental damage to one enemy. In short this thing rocks. It’s an awesome damage dealer, and it’s magic! With no MP!
Suplex (Gained at level 10): Picks up and throws one enemy. The first time I got this blitz, I was like, “Yeah! Awesome!” but it’s not the cup of tea it appears. It’s great if you’re fighting just one enemy, which is never the case unless you’re at a boss, but every boss I’ve fought has been immune to it. I think it’s a waste of time.
Fire Dance (Gained at level 15): Casts fire elemental damage to all enemies. The fact that it attacks more than one enemy at a time makes it awesome on its own. It doesn’t deal a lot of damage to just one character, but it’s nice to give damage to an entire group of enemies for once.
Mantra (Gained at level 23): Heals everyone but himself to his current HP. As a character definer? It’s awesome; I always knew Sabin cared about people! As a battle tactic? It’s okay. It can be pretty neat if you use it correctly, but for the most part it comes out being mediocre, especially if you have Cure 2 already. Put Sabin in the back where he’s less likely to be dealt damage, and when it comes Sabin’s turn to fight, use it to heal. Like I said, not that great, but I’m sure Celes loved Sabin for this in the World of Ruin.
Air Blade (Gained at level 30) Casts wind elemental damage to all enemies. You’ll be really happy to get this. It’s almost like Fire Dance, but deals more damage.
Spiraler (Gained at level 42): Sacrifices Sabin to heal and cure party. I know Sabin loves his brother, but come on! I hate this. Don’t take Sabin out of the game. You’re gonna have a tough time winning a battle without him at this stage.
Bum Rush (Gained at level 70; You can also get this by meeting Duncan.): Near-fatal damage to one enemy. You’re going to be thanking me when you’ve invested enough time and patience in Sabin to get him to level 70, because this is not only Sabin’s best move, but in my opinion one of the best moves in the game. Learn it, own it, use it.
