Appeal
Why do I like Sabin? Let me count thy ways…
It’s pretty simple, really. Sabin is a character that’s misunderstood. He’s seen as a buff no-brainer, but he’s really more than that. There’s so much to him under his rough exterior. He’s really smart, he’s really sensitive, and he’s funny. His body really contradicts his personality, and I find it interesting.
He’s also naive. I like naïve characters because there’s usually a reason for their naivety, and Sabin’s reason was interesting to think about as I went through the game. Here’s what I’ve come up with: It’s because of Edgar. Minus the ten years Sabin trained martial arts, Edgar has been there to console and protect Sabin. He took on all the stress of Figaro so Sabin could be free. In a sense, Sabin hasn’t really had to make a decision on his own, so he really hasn’t experienced that part of life. That makes him naïve. Edgar on the other hand probably makes decisions everyday as king, and that naivety isn’t there with him.
Aside from how cool his pixel looked, his strength and battle value was the last thing that attracted me to Sabin. His magic defense is really low, but once you fix that he’s incredible. Sabin’s a fighter, and he was the leader of my party throughout most of the game.
